US Overdose Deaths Decline for Third Year

A Tenuous Reprieve: The Overdose Death Toll Drops, But Challenges Remain The United States has been grappling with an opioid epidemic for decades.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that overdose deaths decreased by 14 percent in 2025, down to nearly 70,000 fatalities – a decline from more than 81,000 in 2024.

This marks the third consecutive year of decrease.
