This landmark legislation had previously been limited in its application to domestic incidents, mirroring a pattern seen in many other countries, including the United States.

The numbers are stark: almost 340,000 urgent protective measures for women were granted through the Maria da Penha law mechanisms in the first semester of this year, a staggering 170% increase compared to the same period in 2020.
