The Himalayas’ Unseen Enemy: Climate Change’s Devastating Toll on Nepal

The recent flash floods in Nepal and Tibet have left an indelible mark on the region, claiming over 1,100 lives and displacing thousands more. This disaster is not just a natural catastrophe but also a stark reminder of humanity’s neglectful relationship with the environment.

The destruction is staggering – at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris have been left behind, according to preliminary estimates from the United Nations Development Programme. The affected area in Nepal was home to several hydropower stations and one solar plant, which have stopped operating due to damage. This highlights the region’s vulnerability and underscores the risks posed by climate change.

The glacial collapse that triggered the flash floods is a striking aspect of this disaster. In 2020, a UN-backed study identified 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes across Nepal, India, and China, with 31 classified as Rank I – posing the highest risk of an outburst. Researchers warned of rising temperatures reshaping the Himalayan landscape, leading to increased risks of glacial lake outburst floods.

The timing of this disaster is also noteworthy. Just a week ago, Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office announced that more than 270 workers had been rescued from tunnel sites below hydropower stations. However, as many as 600 workers remain trapped in these tunnels, underscoring the urgency and complexity of the rescue efforts.

Climate change has exacerbated this disaster, and Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has already demanded compensation from large greenhouse gas emitters. He argues that “Nepal’s greenhouse gas emissions are virtually negligible” yet they’re paying the price for a global crisis.

The implications of this disaster extend far beyond Nepal’s borders. The study on glacial lakes identified not only risks to communities downstream but also long-term consequences for those living in these villages. Rising temperatures are reshaping the Himalayan landscape, making it increasingly difficult for people to rebuild their lives in areas prone to such disasters.

Nepal is not alone in facing this crisis; other vulnerable nations are paying the price for a global problem they did not create. China, India, and other major industrial emitters have a historical responsibility to compensate countries like Nepal.

As search operations continue, addressing the root causes of this disaster – climate change – is crucial. The Himalayas serve as a canary in the coal mine, warning us about the devastating consequences of our neglectful relationship with the environment.
